Bible Activities for Preschoolers: 10 Simple Ideas for Home
Preschoolers are curious, wiggly and ready to learn. That makes ages 3 to 5 a wonderful time to begin sharing the stories of the Bible. A Bible, a few household supplies and ten minutes a day are enough to build a joyful habit. The psalmist says, "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." (Psalm 119:105, ESV).
1. Read one short story a day
Keep it short: one story, one big idea. Ask two questions afterward: "Who was in the story?" and "What did God do?" It is fine to read the same story all week.
2. Act it out
Let your child march around the "walls of Jericho" (the couch), tiptoe like the shepherds, or crouch in a laundry-basket "boat" while you tell how Jesus calmed the storm (Mark 4:35–41).
3. Story baskets
Gather toys that match a story: animals for Noah's ark, a stuffed sheep for the lost sheep (Luke 15:3–7). Pull items out as you tell the story, then let your child retell it.
4. Simple coloring pages
While they color, retell what happened in the picture. Older preschoolers can dictate a sentence for you to write at the bottom.
5. Picture hunts and beginner puzzles
Read a story, then search the picture for key items. As letters become familiar, very simple word searches with only three or four words make a fun bridge to reading.
6. Sing a verse
Short verses are easy to sing to a familiar tune. Sing it at breakfast, in the car and at bedtime.
7. Creation days with real things
Walk through Genesis 1 over a week: a flashlight in a dark room, a seed in a cup, the moon, the birds. Each day ends with: "God made it, and it was good."
8. Prayer with pictures
Each evening, choose a photo of a family member or friend and pray for them together.
9. Kindness missions
After reading about the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25–37), help your child draw a card for a neighbor. Little hands can serve in big ways.
10. A weekly review jar
Write each week's story on a slip of paper and put it in a jar. On Fridays, pull out two old slips and retell them together.
Tips for keeping it joyful
- Keep it short. Five to ten minutes is plenty.
- Follow their interest. If your child loves animals, start with stories full of them.
- Use the same time each day.
- Let them see you love God's Word. Children copy what we treasure.
